Daily Bites Of God's Word - Part 15 - Psalm 119:15
Just as we need daily food to sustain us physically, we also need daily food from God’s Word to sustain us spiritually.
15 I will muse upon Your precepts
And look upon Your ways.
When is the last time you truly meditated on God’s Word? I am not speaking of some wacky Eastern religious meditation where you sit in a room cross-legged and make weird noises for hours on end. No, I am talking about true meditation where you deeply think about what you have read and how to apply it. It is a meditation where you consider inspired Scripture and pray to ask the Spirit to help you better understand.
Word Study
Muse - to meditate, to ponder, to reflect, to contemplate.
Look - to look, behold, regard, consider, to gaze intently.
The use of sight as a metaphor for perception and understanding was key to Hebrew culture. Thus, it makes sense that sight is used often in the Psalms to make a point about deep reflection or understanding. We should never read Scripture as a “check-list” item that we can say we have completed. We need to read, study, pray over, reflect, and apply the words of Scripture. Spend time thinking deeply about the things of God in His word.
Applying This Daily Bite
When is the last time you spent more than 5 minutes reading and thinking about Scripture?
Have you ever taken a verse or passage and took the time to make notes and ask questions of the text?
When is the last time you prayed to seek understanding of a particular text?
Praying This Daily Bite
Lord, help me to treasure your Word. Please help me to not view your Word as just some task to be completed but as daily spiritual food for my soul. I want to learn to meditate and pray over your Word. Have your Holy Spirit guide me into a greater understanding of biblical meditation.
